Принцип работы

How Does a Breather Valve Work?

A breather valve remains closed while tank pressure and vacuum stay within the intended operating range. The pressure or vacuum pallet opens when its corresponding set point is reached.

  1. Liquid filling or thermal expansion increases internal tank pressure.
  2. The pressure pallet opens at the selected pressure setting.
  3. Vapor or gas leaves the tank until pressure returns toward the normal range.
  4. Liquid withdrawal, cooling, or condensation can create tank vacuum.
  5. The vacuum pallet opens at the selected vacuum setting.
  6. Air or inert gas enters until the vacuum condition is reduced.

The actual operating behavior depends on the valve design, set points, flow capacity, medium, temperature, pressure drop, and installation conditions.

Application Data

Information Required for Breather Valve Selection

Accurate tank and process data is essential for determining set points, pressure capacity, vacuum capacity, materials, and connection size.

Tank and Process Conditions

  • Tank type and dimensions
  • Stored medium and vapor characteristics
  • Tank design pressure
  • Tank design vacuum
  • Normal operating pressure
  • Operating and design temperature
  • Ambient operating conditions

Venting and Product Requirements

  • Maximum filling rate
  • Maximum emptying rate
  • Required pressure-relief capacity
  • Required vacuum-relief capacity
  • Pressure and vacuum set points
  • Connection size and standard
  • Body and internal materials
Selection Factor Why It Matters
Tank Design Limits The selected settings must remain within the allowable pressure and vacuum limits of the tank.
Filling Rate Influences the required pressure-relief or outbreathing capacity.
Emptying Rate Influences the required vacuum-relief or inbreathing capacity.
Thermal Breathing Ambient and process temperature changes can increase or reduce tank vapor volume.
Stored Medium Affects material compatibility, vapor behavior, corrosion resistance, and safety evaluation.
Allowable Pressure Drop Additional equipment and piping can affect the available venting capacity.

Sizing Considerations

Breather Valve Sizing Is More Than Selecting a Nozzle Size

A tank nozzle connection does not automatically determine the correct breather valve capacity. The complete venting requirement should be evaluated before selecting the valve size.

  • Normal liquid filling and emptying rates
  • Thermal inbreathing and outbreathing
  • Tank design pressure and vacuum
  • Required valve set points
  • Medium density and vapor properties
  • Inlet and outlet piping pressure losses
  • Additional flame arrester pressure drop
  • Weather screens, hoods, and discharge piping
  • Applicable tank and project requirements

Часто задаваемые вопросы

Breather Valve FAQ

What is a breather valve?

A breather valve is a tank-mounted pressure and vacuum relief device that opens at selected settings to protect a storage tank during normal filling, emptying, and thermal breathing.

What is another name for a breather valve?

Depending on the design and application, it may also be called a pressure vacuum relief valve, pressure vacuum vent, conservation vent, or tank vent valve.

How does a breather valve protect a storage tank?

It relieves excessive internal pressure and allows air or gas to enter during vacuum conditions, helping keep the tank within its allowable operating limits.

How is a breather valve sized?

Sizing considers tank design limits, filling and emptying rates, thermal breathing, stored medium, required set points, pressure losses, and applicable project requirements.

How should pressure and vacuum set points be selected?

The settings should protect the tank without interfering with normal operation. They must be coordinated with the tank design pressure, design vacuum, operating range, and required capacity.

What is the difference between a breather valve and an emergency vent?

A breather valve handles normal pressure and vacuum changes. An emergency vent provides additional pressure-relief capacity during abnormal conditions such as external fire exposure.

Can a breather valve reduce vapor loss?

Yes. By remaining closed until its selected set point is reached, a suitable breather valve can help reduce unnecessary vapor release compared with an open vent.

Can a flame arrester be installed with a breather valve?

In selected applications, the products may be installed together or supplied as a combined arrangement. Pressure drop, vapor characteristics, installation, and flame-protection requirements must be evaluated.

Does every tank need the same breather valve?

No. Valve type, set points, capacity, materials, and connections depend on the tank design, stored medium, operating conditions, and project requirements.

Where should a breather valve be installed?

It is generally installed on a suitable tank-roof nozzle in the specified orientation, with sufficient access for inspection and maintenance.

What maintenance does a breather valve require?

Maintenance normally includes checking pallets, seats, seals, guides, screens, weather hoods, corrosion, deposits, movement, and set-point performance.

What information is required for a quotation?

Please provide the tank size, medium, design pressure, design vacuum, temperature, filling rate, emptying rate, required capacity, connection, material, quantity, and documentation requirements.
