Filtration Principle

How a Pipeline Filter Protects Equipment

Process fluid passes through a perforated, mesh-lined or wedge-wire element. Particles larger than the selected opening remain on the dirty side while filtered fluid continues downstream.

  1. Contaminated fluid enters the filter or strainer body.
  2. Flow is distributed across the filtration element.
  3. Solid particles are retained by the selected opening.
  4. Filtered fluid exits toward downstream equipment.
  5. Differential pressure increases as debris accumulates.
  6. The element is cleaned, replaced or automatically flushed.

Pipeline filtration working principle

Particle Size

Defines the required perforation, mesh or slot opening.

Скорость потока

Determines connection size and required filtration area.

Перепад давления

Must remain acceptable in clean and contaminated conditions.

Maintenance Strategy

Determines whether simplex, duplex or automatic cleaning is suitable.

Часто задаваемые вопросы

Pipeline Filter FAQ

Answers to common questions from engineers, operators and procurement teams.

What is a pipeline filter?

A pipeline filter removes solid particles from a flowing medium to protect pumps, valves, meters and other downstream equipment.

What is the difference between a filter and a strainer?

The terms often overlap. Strainers generally remove larger particles, while filters may provide finer separation. The required opening is more important than the name.

Which filter is best for a compact pipeline?

A Y strainer is often suitable where installation space is limited and debris loading is moderate.

Which filter supports continuous operation?

A duplex strainer or automatic filter can support continued filtration while cleaning is performed, subject to the selected configuration.

How is the filtration opening selected?

Select an opening small enough to protect downstream equipment but large enough to maintain acceptable flow and cleaning intervals.

How is pressure drop evaluated?

Pressure drop depends on flow, fluid properties, body size, element area and opening size. Both clean and dirty conditions should be reviewed.

When is a temporary strainer required?

A temporary strainer is commonly installed during flushing and commissioning to capture construction debris before normal operation begins.

How often should the element be cleaned?

The interval depends on contamination level and allowable pressure drop. Differential-pressure monitoring provides a practical cleaning indicator.

Can BCST Valve provide custom filters?

Project-specific dimensions, materials, filtration openings, nozzle arrangements and accessories can be reviewed against the operating data.

What information is required for a quotation?

Provide the pipe size, flow rate, pressure, temperature, medium, particle size, filtration opening, connection standard and maintenance requirements.
