Operating Principle

How a Butterfly Damper Works

  1. Open position: The blade aligns with the gas path to provide a large available flow area.
  2. Modulating movement: The actuator rotates the shaft and blade to the required intermediate position.
  3. Régulation du débit : The changing blade angle modifies resistance and controls the system flow.
  4. Closed position: The blade rotates across the duct and approaches or contacts the sealing arrangement.
  5. Position feedback: Switches or transmitters can report open, closed or modulating position to the control system.

Butterfly dampers used in gas ducts are not automatically bubble-tight. The required leakage level must be stated during selection so the blade, seal and actuator can be configured correctly.

Isolation and Modulating Service

Isolation Damper

An isolation damper normally operates between fully open and fully closed positions.

  • Maintenance isolation
  • Process-line switching
  • Emergency or planned shutdown duties
  • Open and closed position indication
  • Leakage requirement defined by the project

Modulating Damper

A modulating damper operates at intermediate blade positions to regulate air or gas flow.

  • Combustion-air control
  • Draft and pressure regulation
  • Process-gas balancing
  • Positioner or control-signal operation
  • Performance evaluated across the operating range

Leakage Performance

Select the Correct Sealing Arrangement

The phrase “closed damper” does not define an acceptable leakage rate. Isolation requirements should be quantified before the damper is manufactured.

  • Clearance seal: Suitable where limited closed-position leakage is acceptable.
  • Metal contact seal: Improves isolation for compatible temperatures and operating cycles.
  • Flexible seal: Supports lower leakage where the seal material is compatible with the gas and temperature.
  • Double-blade design: Creates an intermediate cavity for sealing-air or purge arrangements.
  • Air-purge arrangement: Establishes a pressure barrier where enhanced isolation is required.

  • High output torque
  • Controlled operating speed
  • Engineered hydraulic accessories

High-temperature butterfly damper

Materials & Temperature

Designed for the Gas and Thermal Conditions

  • Carbon steel: Common for compatible air and moderate-temperature gas service.
  • Acier inoxydable : Selected for corrosion resistance or elevated-temperature performance.
  • Heat-resistant alloy: Evaluated for demanding furnace, kiln and hot-gas applications.
  • Refractory lining: Considered where the metal structure requires additional thermal protection.
  • External bearings: Can help separate bearing components from the hot or contaminated gas path.
  • Shaft sealing: Selected according to temperature, pressure and acceptable external leakage.

Thermal expansion, distortion and transient temperature conditions must be considered for high-temperature dampers.

Questions fréquemment posées

Butterfly Damper FAQ

What is an industrial butterfly damper?

It is a rotating-blade device used to isolate or regulate air, flue gas and process-gas flow inside an industrial duct.

Is a butterfly damper the same as a butterfly valve?

No. Dampers are generally designed for air and gas ducts, often at lower pressures and larger sizes. Butterfly valves are normally designed according to liquid or pressurized piping requirements.

Can a butterfly damper provide zero leakage?

A standard single-blade damper normally permits some leakage. Very low leakage or positive isolation requires a suitable seal, double-blade system or purge arrangement.

Can the damper regulate gas flow?

Yes. A modulating actuator can position the blade between fully open and fully closed. Control performance depends on system resistance, blade design and operating range.

Which actuator should be selected?

The choice depends on required torque, operating speed, control mode, cycle frequency, fail position and available plant utilities.

Can the damper handle high-temperature gas?

High-temperature designs are available. The materials, shaft arrangement, bearings, seals, insulation and thermal expansion must be evaluated for the stated temperature.

Can BCST manufacture a custom-size butterfly damper?

Yes. Round, square and rectangular configurations can be evaluated using the project duct dimensions, connection details and service conditions.

What information is required for quotation?

Provide duct dimensions, gas composition, flow, pressure, temperature, particulate loading, leakage requirement, control function, connection details and actuator preference.
