Startup Pipeline Protection

Temporary Strainer Manufacturer

BCST Valve manufactures temporary strainers for removing welding slag, scale, rust and construction debris during pipeline flushing, commissioning and startup.

Temporary strainers are installed between pipe flanges for a defined operating period. Their compact construction provides economical equipment protection before the permanent filtration system enters normal service.

  • Conical, truncated-cone and flat plate designs
  • Metric and ASME flange-compatible configurations
  • Perforated plate and mesh-lined elements
  • Carbon steel and stainless steel options
  • Custom dimensions and filtration openings

Operating Principle

How a Temporary Strainer Works

The temporary strainer is clamped between two pipe flanges. Process fluid passes through the perforated or mesh-lined element while debris remains on its upstream surface.

  1. The element is installed before flushing or startup.
  2. Fluid enters the open side of the strainer.
  3. Construction debris is retained by the screen.
  4. Filtered fluid continues toward downstream equipment.
  5. Differential pressure increases as debris accumulates.
  6. The element is removed when the temporary duty is complete.

Temporary strainer working principle

Debris Loading

Determines the required screen area and inspection frequency.

Screen Opening

Must protect equipment while allowing the required startup flow.

الضغط التفاضلي

The element must withstand the specified clean and dirty conditions.

Installation Length

Cone length must fit safely inside the available pipe section.

Installation & Removal

Use Temporary Strainers Safely

The installation procedure should define orientation, pressure monitoring, inspection frequency and removal after commissioning.

Installation Guidelines

  • Verify flow direction before installing the element.
  • Confirm that the cone fits inside the downstream pipe.
  • Use gaskets suitable for the flange and process conditions.
  • Keep the identification handle visible outside the flanges.
  • Provide pressure monitoring across the strainer.
  • Record the installed location and removal plan.

Inspection and Removal

  • Monitor differential pressure during flushing and startup.
  • Reduce flow or isolate the line if pressure drop rises excessively.
  • Depressurize and drain the pipeline before removal.
  • Inspect the element for deformation or damage.
  • Remove the temporary strainer after its defined duty.
  • Install the correct permanent gasket before closing the flanges.

Temporary Strainer FAQ

Answers to common questions from engineers, commissioning teams and procurement specialists.

What is a temporary strainer?

A temporary strainer is a removable pipeline screen used during flushing, commissioning or startup to protect equipment from construction debris.

How is it different from a permanent strainer?

A temporary strainer has no permanent service housing and is normally removed after startup. A permanent strainer is designed for repeated in-service cleaning.

When should a conical strainer be selected?

A conical strainer is useful when greater filtration area and dirt-holding capacity are required than a flat plate can provide.

When should a flat plate strainer be used?

A flat plate is suitable where installation length is limited and the expected debris loading is relatively low.

Which direction should the cone point?

Orientation depends on the flow direction, support construction and design differential pressure. Follow the approved drawing and installation instructions.

How is the screen opening selected?

Select an opening small enough to protect downstream equipment while maintaining acceptable startup flow and pressure drop.

How is blockage detected?

Pressure readings upstream and downstream of the strainer can indicate increasing differential pressure as debris accumulates.

Can a temporary strainer remain permanently installed?

It should normally be removed after its defined duty unless the pipeline and element have been specifically reviewed for continued service.

Can BCST Valve manufacture custom dimensions?

Project-specific flange rings, cone lengths, filtration areas, screen openings and materials can be reviewed against the submitted pipeline data.

What information is required for a quotation?

Provide the pipe size, flange details, pressure, temperature, medium, flow rate, screen opening, differential pressure and installation length.
