Operating Principle

How a Tee Strainer Works

Process fluid moves through the straight body and passes across the filter element installed inside the perpendicular chamber. Solid particles remain on the dirty side of the screen while filtered fluid continues downstream.

  1. Unfiltered process fluid enters the strainer inlet.
  2. Flow passes through the perforated or mesh-lined screen.
  3. Solid particles collect on the upstream screen surface.
  4. Filtered fluid exits through the straight pipeline connection.
  5. Differential pressure rises as debris accumulates.
  6. The element is isolated, removed and cleaned when required.

Tee strainer working principle

Required Flow

Determines body size, connection size and filtration area.

Screen Opening

Must protect downstream equipment without excessive restriction.

Allowable Pressure Drop

Must be checked for both clean and contaminated conditions.

Maintenance Clearance

Sufficient space is required for safe screen removal.

Tee Strainer FAQ

Answers to common questions from engineers, operators and procurement teams.

What is a tee strainer?

A tee strainer is a straight-through pipeline filter with a removable screen installed inside a perpendicular chamber.

Is a tee strainer the same as a T-type strainer?

Yes. Both terms generally describe a strainer with a straight main flow path and a perpendicular screen-access chamber.

What is the difference between a tee and Y strainer?

A tee strainer uses a perpendicular screen chamber, while a Y strainer uses an angled pocket. Selection depends on layout, flow and maintenance requirements.

Can a tee strainer be used permanently?

Yes. Permanent tee strainers include a serviceable body, removable screen, cover, drain and optional monitoring connections.

How is the screen opening selected?

Select an opening small enough to protect downstream equipment while maintaining acceptable flow, pressure drop and cleaning intervals.

How is tee strainer size determined?

Selection considers pipe size, flow rate, fluid properties, screen opening, filtration area and allowable clean and dirty pressure drop.

Can it be installed vertically?

Selected designs can be installed vertically when the flow direction, screen orientation and debris collection arrangement are suitable.

How often should the screen be cleaned?

The interval depends on debris concentration and allowable pressure drop. Differential-pressure monitoring provides a practical indication of blockage.

Can BCST Valve manufacture a custom tee strainer?

Project-specific dimensions, materials, screen openings, nozzle orientations and accessories can be reviewed against the operating conditions.

What information is required for a quotation?

Provide the pipe size, flow rate, pressure, temperature, medium, screen opening, body material, connection standard and installation orientation.
